In 2018, the City of Malden was awarded a Massachusetts Gaming Commission Non-Transportation Planning Grant to complete a land use and economic development plan for the Broadway (Rte. 99) Corridor in Malden. The Malden Redevelopment Authority is managing the grant on behalf of the City.
The framework plan includes a study of existing physical and economic conditions of the corridor, projections of Encore Casino related impacts, and recommendations on land use, economic development, and job retention and creation strategies. The plan addresses specific challenges and opportunities of the corridor by providing the City of Malden with a clear and action-oriented plan to protect important uses, prepare for and regulate new development, and utilize gaming facility-driven economic opportunities to grow Malden’s business community and prevent Corridor deterioration.
Through a competitive bidding process, the City and MRA selected planning firm, BSC Group to assist in the development of this study in July 2019. BSC is providing planning expertise to the project and carrying out an extensive community outreach process, including community meetings and surveys, to gather as much feedback as possible.
The first community meeting was held October 23, 2019 at the Malden Moose Hall. Key findings from the initial analysis phase were presented in an open house style event and feedback was collected from attendees on what they envision for the future of the corridor. When the analysis phase is complete, BSC will then turn to developing corridor-wide recommendations on land use and infrastructure, development scenarios for key sites, economic development and job retention/creation strategies, and a thorough implementation plan to address each recommendation.
